How to Install an APK File on Android

Quick note: APK files are Android app packages that you can install manually outside of the Google Play Store. The process is straightforward and safe when downloading from trusted sources.

What is an APK file?

An APK (Android Package Kit) file is the file format used by the Android operating system to distribute and install applications. Think of it as the Android equivalent of a .exe file on Windows or a .dmg file on macOS.

APK files contain all the elements an app needs to install correctly on your Android device, including the app's code, resources, assets, certificates, and manifest file.

Before you begin

  • Make sure your Android device is running Android 4.0 or higher.
  • Ensure you have enough storage space on your device.
  • Download the APK file from a trusted source only.
  • Have a file manager app installed (most modern Android devices include one).
iPhone / iOS note: APK files are designed exclusively for Android devices. They cannot be installed on iPhone, iPad, or any iOS device. If you use an Apple device, please search the App Store for the application instead.

Step 1: Download the APK file

Tap the Download APK button on the app's download page. Your browser will prompt you to confirm the download. Accept the download and wait for it to complete. The file will be saved to your device's Downloads folder by default.

Step 2: Enable installation from unknown sources

Before installing an APK, you need to allow your device to install apps from sources other than the Google Play Store.

  • Open your device Settings.
  • Go to Security (or Privacy on some devices).
  • Enable Unknown Sources or Install unknown apps.
  • On Android 8.0 and above, you may be asked to allow a specific app (like your browser or file manager) to install unknown apps — tap Allow.

Step 3: Locate the downloaded APK

Open your device's File Manager app and navigate to the Downloads folder. You should see the APK file you just downloaded. Alternatively, pull down the notification shade and tap the completed download notification to open the file directly.

Step 4: Install the APK

Tap the APK file to begin the installation. A screen will appear showing the permissions the app requires. Review the permissions and tap Install to proceed. The installation usually takes only a few seconds.

Step 5: Open and enjoy the app

Once the installation is complete, tap Open to launch the app immediately, or tap Done to find the app in your app drawer later. The app icon will appear on your home screen or in your app list just like any other app.

Common Install Errors & Fixes

  • "App not installed" — The APK may be corrupted or incompatible. Try re-downloading the file from a trusted source.
  • "Parse error" — The APK is not compatible with your Android version. Check the minimum Android OS requirement for the app.
  • "Install blocked" — Unknown sources are not enabled. Follow Step 2 above.
  • "Insufficient storage" — Free up space on your device and try again.
  • App crashes after install — Clear the app cache from Settings > Apps > [App name] > Clear Cache, then relaunch.
